Hypertension: brainstem injury

Irritation of the pons, medulla, or 5th cranial nerve can lead to bradycardia or tachycardia, hypotension or hypertension, and arrhythmia. During brainstem surgery close monitoring of EKG and arterial pressure is necessary.
