Coronary perfusion pressure: L vs. R
Last updated: 03/04/2015
Coronary perfusion pressure is defined as the difference between systemic arterial pressure and intraventricular pressure. Because LV pressures equal or exceed systemic arterial pressures (as the LV is the source of systemic pressure some pressure drop occurs through the LVOT and aortic valve), left ventricular coronary perfusion is intermittent and only occurs during diastole. In fact, blood flow to the LV may actually reverse during systole. In contrast, right ventricular blood flow occurs during both systole and diastole
(for more information on the RV, see also Right Ventricle)
Coronary Perfusion
- Left ventricle: during diastole only. Perfusion pressure = SBP – LVP
- Right ventricle: during systole and diastole. Perfusion pressure = SBP – RVP
