Explanation

Prone position is typically associated with improved oxygenation, a lower FRC, and a better drainage of secretions. Initial data from Gattinoni's trial and the Prone-Supine II Study Group suggested improved oxygenation but no improvement in mortality with prone positioning. More recently, the ProSeva trial (n = 466) challenged these results, demonstrating a large reduction in the mortality of patients with severe ARDS.
