Cryoprecipitate contains which of the following coagulation factors?
Explanation
Cryoprecipitate is prepared by the centrifugation of FFP, which has been thawed at 4°C. Each unit (around 10 to 15 mL) typically provides fibrinogen 150-250 mg, factor VIII 80-150 U, von Willebrand factor 100-150 U, and factor XIII 50-75 U. One unit of cryoprecipitate per 10 kg body weight raises plasma fibrinogen concentration by approximately 50 mg per dL as long as there is no continued consumption or massive bleeding. Indications for administration of cryoprecipitate according to the American Society of Anesthesiologist’s Task Force on Blood Component Therapy include prophylaxis in nonbleeding perioperative or peripartum patients with congenital fibrinogen deficiencies, von Willebrand disease unresponsive to DDAVP, bleeding patients with von Willebrand disease, and correction of microvascular bleeding in massively transfused patients with fibrinogen concentrations less than 80-100 mg per dL.
