Editing Existing Pages
How Do I Edit an Existing Page?
Easy. When you are on a page that you want to edit, click on the Edit tab at the very top of the page to edit the entire page. Or, if there is a particular section you'd like to edit, click on the "Edit" link on the right side of the page at the top of the session. For some pages, you may have to be logged in to edit the pages.
Creating New Pages
How Do I Make a New Page?
Suppose you wanted to create a new page about SIMV because you know a lot about SIMV. You're not sure where you want to store the page (critical care? controversies? topics? see Categories below for more information on how to organize your pages). To make a page called SIMV, all you have to do is type the following into your browser window
http://openanesthesia.org/index.php?title=SIMV
If that page already exists, ie someone beat you to the punch, you will go to the page. If not, MediaWiki will create the page for you and will display the following text:
There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page
Just click on the "edit this page" link and start writing!
Deleting Existing Pages
How Do I Delete a Page?
First, before you delete a page, be SURE you want to do so. If you have any questions about this, email webmaster at openanesthesia dot org before deleting anything. That said, if you have an obvious deletion (ex. a page that you accidentally created, or that is a duplicate), deleting is easy - just go to the page you want to delete, select "edit" at the top of the page, erase all of the text in the text box, and save the changes. That page will be gone forever - unless, of course, someone else comes along and recreates it
Formatting
How Do I Make Subject Headings?
These are done with the equal signs. For instance, to make a large subject heading entitled "Chapter 1", type the following:
=Chapter 1=
Smaller sub-headings use more equal signs (2, 3, or even 4), for example
==Subheading==
Why are Headings So Important?
Because they allow MediaWiki to automatically generate a table of contents for your page. Pages with four or more headings get a table of contents.
How Do I Add An Image To My Text?
First, you have to set up a user account (click on "login" at the top if you haven't already done so). Once you have set up your account, click on "Upload file" on the Toolbox bar on the left of the screen. Once you've uploaded your image click here to decide how you want to display it
How Do I Make A Text Box?
To make a separate text box (for example, if you are doing Key Points), type
<pre> whatever text you want < /pre> (except without the space between the < and the /, used here for formatting purposes)
into your page. For really long sentences, you will have to hit "enter" at the end of each line (after ~ 100 characters), otherwise MediaWiki will make a really long line - words/sentences in the < pre> tags do not have "word wrap" functionality.
How Do I Add A Table Of Contents?
In order to force MediaWiki to generate a table of contents, type the following at the top of your page:
__TOC__
Note that this is two consecutive underscores, both before and after the word "TOC"
Organizing / Website Structure
What Are Categories?
Categories are one of the ways that MediaWiki organizes wiki pages. Not all pages have to have a category. But, sometimes a group of pages will all have something in common (ex. they will all be related to critical care), and in those instances one might assign them all to a Category. Why would you do this? Because, if you group similar pages in the same category,
Categories we have created (or will create soon) include a critical care category, references category, board review questions category, etc. Note that one page can have multiple categories.
How Do I Use Categories?
Insert the following into your wiki page:
[[Category:category name]]

How Does OpenAnesthesia.org Use Categories?
We use categories in two ways. First, we use them to assign a variety (and often multiple) categories to each page. A page on PPIs, for instance, will be assigned the categories of pharmacology, and gastrointestinal, as PPIs deal with both.
Additionally, for some large categories (such as Anesthesia, Pharmacology, etc.), we actually use the category page as the main page (go to for an example). Category pages can be edited just like other pages, the only difference is at the bottom of a category page, all of the pages that make up that category are listed. When a category page such as is created, we then "redirect" the original page to that category. For questions, email the webmaster at webmaster at openanesthesia dot org
